The sewing school

The sewing school

This project commenced in April 2016 and is scheduled for 4 afternoons per week. The total duration of the course is 2 years, after which a diploma is awarded. The course is aimed at young women between the ages of 16 and 20 who, having had to leave school, do not have any qualifications or at others who wish to learn a trade in order to work and be independent. The attendance of the course also means that the family delays the age at which young women are married.
The course is currently attended by 7 girls, three of whom have shown good skills and will be able to join Balò Tailoring.
The tailoring teacher who is named Shabana and who is also coordinator and head of the Balo tailoring centre, graduated from the Institute of Fashion and Design in Calcutta.
Shabana’s story is very interesting because she could not go to college, despite being a good student, because her parents could not pay the fees. She got married, had two children, then with what she earned by sewing in the tailoring centre and by encouraging her, she enrolled in the Institute of Fashion and Design, her dream. She completed the course with excellent grades and can now teach.
